I plan and post an event for the week. Each event packs a creative flavor of cultural, social, and the most economical means of having fun. You decide whether you want to come along or not. Simple as that. What is the flavor of this week? Check out my posts!

Saturday
- MONTHLY 1 - HOUSEWARMING/SUPPER - TAPAS
What a success! There must've been about 50 people in attendance. I thought we'd be able to fit only 20 comfortably. But it wasn't that bad. It got pretty loud in there, but I think everyone was having a great time. We got a lot of compliments on the food, Deane's photo gallery, my jewelry and vintage items, our place, and "us"! It was such an ego-booster and we're so blessed to have so many wonderful people in our lives. Thank you everyone who celebrated with us, for the extra food and gifts - so not necessary but greatly appreciated. I hope we get to have another get-together soon.

Now for the supper part of this review. The Spanish food seemed to be a hit! It was my first time making any of that food, but it all turned out pretty tasty, especially since I took the risk and liberty of improvising since we didn't have certain ingredients or kitchen "tools." Total time to make all of this before the party - 6 hours.
1. Zucchini Boats (veg/non-veg) - non-veg with salmon was excellent! - I fried the zucchini (instead of steamed them) before baking.
2. Asparagus with Honey and Red Wine - we didn't have sherry so I used week-old red wine and some sugar
3. Jalapeno Stuffed with Herbed Goat Cheese - I couldn't find "piquillo peppers" which is what the recipe called for, so I made my version of a jalapeno popper. Very spicy! And I LOVE goat cheese!
4. Potatoes (Bravas) with Spicy Tomato Sauce - This was actually my favorite dish of the night. Tonight I used the sauce for pizzas and made the best pizzas because of our yummy leftover dishes.
5. Carrots - tasty, though not a big hit. I think I used too much olive oil.
6. Arugula and Mixed Herb Salad with Pomegranate, Dates, and Crumbled Bleu Cheese - It called for Mesclun, which I couldn't find, figs instead of dates, and to crush the pomegranate in the dressing. The dressing was really good despite the pomegranate seeds.
7. Guacamole - my standard traditional. Deane's classmates went ballistic over it!
8. Bruschetta - another standard traditional. I'm surprised more people didn't go ballistic over this.
9. Fruit Salad (pineapple, mango, blackberry, honeydew, grapes...) - Thank you, mommy, for cutting up the fruit! She was such a great help in us finishing up in time!
10. Brownies - Ghiradelli brand. Can't go wrong. We didn't put the hot fudge over it though, but I don't like too-chocolatey especially if it doesn't have nuts or any other texture in there.
10.5 Apple-blackberry Pie - I only made the crust since people came bearing dessert. (More pie for me and Deane later!)

And Deane made the meat, of course, bacon! He made BLT skewers and bacon-wrapped dates, as well as BBQ beef skewers and his own secret recipe skewers. He also made the rum punch and sangria, which people were after all night. And of course beer and the grill. So when people came through the door, first thing I told them was to get a plate of food. First thing Deane helped them with was their drinks. We make a great team! :)

Sunday
- Santa Barbara - steel houses (beautiful! inspires me to become an architect... sorta)
- cleaned up from day before
- made the BEST PIZZA! - pita bread, arugula, goat cheese, mushroom, sausage

- SUPPER CLUB MEAL:
Main Course: Beef Stroganoff was a different recipe from the one I'm used to - the one my grandma Elsie would always make for us as kids, which I believe she followed the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Hers is more creamy and thick. Perhaps she used more sour cream. Mine was almost soupy and the rice soaked it up so it was nice. Plus, the hint of dijon mustard gave it a slight tangy taste. Yum! Even Deane ate it, though I didn't tell him I used the mustard or the sour cream, fearing that he would reject it before he even tried it. But he actually got a second helping (which, if you know him, is a rarity in any dining situation.)
Dessert: The best apple pie recipe (from some magazine my mom got years ago). It's still the best apple pie we've ever had. This time I did a little experimenting. I cut up three types of apples - golden delicious, fuji, and granny smith - a pear, and a whole container of blackberries (which Deane gushed over when he saw them, thinking they were mulberries. But where does anyone get mulberries besides their own farm?) Now, take note, I didn't have a rolling pin or a rolling surface (forgot it at mom's) so I had to hand-press the dough, which was a bit bothersome and tedious. The crust didn't cover the entire mountain of fruit, and I was afraid it the juices would all ooze out and the whole pie would burn. Luckily the result was pure heaven!

- SUPPER CLUB MEAL:
Pork chops were good. My mom helped chop up the veggies, which was sweet and easier on me. We adjusted the proportions, but I'd say next time I make it, I'll add more jalapenos to make it more spicy. other than that, the pineapple and the garlic went surprisingly well together, and it made the pork chops yummier to eat! I also bought center cut pork, with the bone-in, though the recipe called for boneless. Doesn't matter, whatever is cheaper. Also, I used a rice medley from Trader Joe's. Probably should have made it on the stove instead of the rice cooker, but when I reheat it, I'll probably heat it as if I'm making fried rice. That way the rice won't be as goopy or soft. But a yummy and quick meal to make overall!

WEEK 2: Rachael Ray's Book of 10

WHAT: Sweet and Spicy Pineapple Pork (60)

REVIEW on WEEK 1

Friday
- Cleaning up home for the New Year. New Home, New Year.

Saturday
- Jewelry, Photographs

Sunday
- Write Act Meeting - I'm now putting the word out there that I'm a video EDITOR!!!

- SUPPER CLUB MEAL: Yumtastic! Although it was a simple recipe, I had never made hamburgers before, nor have I made oven-fried potatoes (which I think I will keep to stove-top fried potatoes.) Deane said stick to what I know in french fry terms, because I made a mean batch of fries! As for the general note on the food - use less butter! I know in the old days they used butter, shortening, fat, etc. in their cooking. Now I know why people stray away from it. Plus, it's too overpowering, and I prefer my corn and fries butter-free!

Happy New Year!!!

I'm not sure if anybody still reads this blog... if you're out there, thanks for keeping up with me. The endurance put forth in keeping this blog current with my life (in 2009) has been arduous for me and I'm sure lackadaisical for you, but I promise it will be more enjoyable for both of us once again in this new decade of 2010.

Sadly I am still unemployed, one of millions who lost their jobs in 2009. Although I am a bit more hopeful with the new year at hand, I will still use this time to figure out what I'm doing here on this planet. So... as I began two new years ago, with the birth and origin of this blog, I present a new event planner in me. I present to you not only a Rochelle Perry that loves to plan parties, but I present the experimental me: the chef in me, the writer in me, the editor in me, the jeweler and designer in me, the manager in me, the creator in me, the quiet part of me, the loud part of me... the everything in between... the me trying to figure out me.

On NPR today, I listened to a woman speaking about the happiness of her life. It sprung from the work that she did. Likewise, if I am not working I am not happy. That's not to say I don't enjoy a few hours of leisure and pleasure every day, but if I were to sit around the house all day doing nothing, I am not fulfilled. If I'm working on jewelry or writing my play, I fill like I've accomplished something that day even though I'm not getting paid for any of it (which Dear God, I hope I get an extension on my unemployment benefits). So this year, again, I am planning one party a month... one party to "experiment" (if you will) on all my friends a possible career course for me. I call it: "Experimental Monthlies!"

So here are possibilities of what's on the menu:
1. Housewarming/Jewelry Craft Faire
2. Super Secret New Restaurant Idea!
3. Screening of my new film
4. Murder Mystery Dinner Party (written by me!)

Speaking of Menu... Having just moved in with Deane, I am still trying to sort the apartment out. My mind feels like the chaos of boxes and unassigned objects, scattered and abandoned. For Christmas I received cookbooks from just about every adult female in my family. I felt the pressure was on. Were they trying to domesticate me, or make sure I wouldn't succumb to starvation? I mean, I've been living on my own since college. In any case, I feel like I need to use these cookbooks. So Deane suggested I take the "Julie and Julia" approach - cook a meal every day. And if you know me, I cook a lot, so cooking every day for just myself and sometimes for Deane too, would be overkill. So we concluded that a new meal a week is more than feasible. And this is an extension to you all. I invite you all over once a week for my "Supper Club," another addition to this site and making it a truly-to-a-foodie "Flavor of the Week." It will take place Saturday or Sunday evenings.

I will keep you posted on both Experimental Monthlies and Weekly Supper Clubs!!!

Ciao for now and may you have a Happy 2010!
